2018
June marks the start of Pride Month, a movement which celebrates the glorious stance against the discrimination of LGBTQ individuals and commemorates the Stonewall riots. Its events range from dance parties and community days to city marches and festivals, providing people with plenty of ways to get involved. Every year, Sew are overwhelmed by rainbow embroidery and bright garments created in support of the community. Although Pride Month may be drawing to a close, there’s still time to get crafty and celebrate the movement – sit back and take a look at our favourite June makes, then delve into creating some of your own!
Strut your Stuff
Need somewhere to store your face glitter while you're marching? How about in a peacock pouch? This modern twist on an Art Deco classic gives you the chance to play with appliqué and mix your favourite sunshine fabrics to create a handy patchwork. Proud as a peacock? We should think so!
Get the Party Started
Impress your friends when inviting them over for Pride celebrations with this rainbow-coloured knitted bunting. Use a cool cotton yarn and textured stitches to create décor that stands out, and add contrasting coloured buttons for extra pizazz.
Don't Stop Groovin'
Why buy Pride accessories when you can make your own? This sixties pouch is a no-brainer – it incorporates tassels and a spectacular spectrum of colour, as well as providing the perfect opportunity to stitch with studs and pom-poms. With two contrasting fabrics and a funky bobble trim, get your boogie on with this retro clutch.
Magical Mandala
Let the rainbow fly high with this colourful make! The hoop can be displayed proudly on your wall or mantelpiece, and remember, the key to this project is to start in the centre and work your way out. This beautiful mandala hanging is featured in the July issue of Sew, on sale until tomorrow.
Express Yourself
All love is love and it comes in many different shapes and sizes! These cute heart tokens can be made in any colour, and will look fantastic when strung from an i-cord to make sweet bunting. These motifs can be joined together for all manner of projects: think coasters for your post-Pride gathering and quirky embellishments for parade outfits.
Stitch the Rainbow
Sew chatted to Beth O'Loughlin, the fabulous owner and stitcher behind Drop Dead Thread. She chose to celebrate Pride Month with a gorgeous embroidery piece showcasing the Pride flag. Beth says: “The sewing community is so open, accepting and encouraging - being able to show who I am through an artistic medium I love is great!” Beth also feels that “Pride should be recognised all year round as a reminder of the struggles the LGBTQ community still faces – we are all human and everyone deserves to be treated with love and acceptance.” Check out Drop Dead Thread on Etsy!
Stripes of Pride
Founder of DylanaDesigns, Dylana Morrison Perera is inspired when she's surrounded by colour, so it's no surprise her Pride Month makes are extremely vibrant and creative! Dylana's Pride crochet shoulder bag is big enough for all your parade day needs, along with her rainbow zippered purse, created with white zipper closure, which is embroidered with two memorable words: PEACE and LOVE. During our conversation with Dylana, she says: “I believe in loving my neighbours as I do myself. My support is unconditional for the LGBTQ community, always.” Take a look at DylanaDesigns on Etsy!
