It’s not all too often that our beloved craft of sewing makes it onto the big screen. In recent weeks however, the movie world has been abuzz with sewing chat with the launch of Daniel Day-Lewis’ LAST ever film… and it all centres around dressmaking.
The Oscar nominated film has been widely thought of as an unexpected choice for the star’s on-screen exodus - but with a backdrop of 1950s London, the unrivalled charm of elegant couture gowns in the forefront, combined together with the painstaking energies required to create such masterpieces, the story was destined to make for intense viewing.
As is the case - or stereotype, at least - for many geniuses, Day-Lewis’ character Reynolds Jeremiah Woodcock is something of an interesting character. After a young German lady called Alma captures his attentions with her understated beauty she is soon enrolled as his assistant, modelling for him and helping bring his masterpieces to life. In order to create the intricate levels of detail that he does, Woodcock becomes increasingly obsessive and spirals into absurdity.
We won’t tell you any more, but the film promises atmosphere, charm and intrigue, regardless of whether you’re into sewing. Aptly, the film has won awards for its costume design, and the visuals are a treat for the eyes… so sit back and breathe in the details.
