This week marks one of our favourite themes: of course, it’s got to be Music Week! We could barely contain our excitement as the sewers presented their fantastic garments. Musicians have been known to kick off fashion trends, with more recent style icons including Harry Styles, Rihanna, and Elton John.
The sewers well and truly embraced the brief in this week’s challenge, taking inspiration from the 1960’s Mod subculture, country music and none other than the iconic singer-songwriter David Bowie.
The first challenge saw the sewers whip up a parka pattern once loved by the Mods. This enigmatic movement was a fan of graphic prints, colour blocking and boyish shapes. It got us thinking of our Twiggy Shift, a boxy gingham dress that well and truly pays homage to the 60s and gives off a playful vibe. Our designer Amanda Walker blends structured outlines with gentle pink hues to create a refreshing twist on a classic. You’ll get the chance to practice darts and pockets, too!
Our fabulous A-line Skirt is another piece that ticks every style box. This cute, go-to skirt certainly highlights how pretty a 60s style piece can be. Made from corduroy, our turquoise and green gem is a colour blocking wonder. Both flattering and comfortable, it features perfectly placed, contrasting pockets.
The next challenge called for the contestants to transform old denim into a country music masterpiece. We’ve got to say, we do love a bit of Dollie Parton, Shania Twain and Billie Ray Cyrus. If we had to pick a garment fit for a spot of line dancing, it would have to be our Debbie Jumpsuit. Brought to you by Posner and Posner, this stylish all-in-one gives off the denim aesthetic without the heavyweight feel. Made from linen and complete with a belt tie and cropped legs, it can be dressed up or down.
Next up is our Liberty Print Waistcoat, a clever fusion between smart and feminine. We think it would look fantastic with a well-tailored shirt, skirt, or pair of trousers. Made from just six panels, it is a great project for practicing darts and buttonholes. Why not incorporate full florals or silky satins for added interest?
For the encore, the sewers tackled a David Bowie-inspired Made To Measure. We absolutely loved how the Bees modernised Bowie’s outfits! Floor-length, flowing jackets and cropped trousers came to mind for this one. Our simple Gina Jacket is light enough for warmer days, whilst keeping out any unexpected chills. Made from faux suede, this chic overcoat is reminiscent of a waterfall. Don’t forget to neaten the edges with an overlocker or a zig zag stitch.
We think David Bowie would approve of our Laurel Tapered Trousers by Amanda Walker. Decked out in forest green with a smattering of orange flowers, these cigarette pants are simply fit for music royalty. If you ask us, it is the ideal garment for zipping between the boardroom and the bar. Simply pop on a pair of flats for casual look or heels for a touch of glamour.
