Travel to Australia: tips for organising your sewing kit and all about your visa

#AD Since February, it is possible to travel again to Australia. If you have been postponing a holiday or a visit to your family in Australia this is great news. In case you want to bring your sewing project along with you, here are some tips for organising a travel sewing kit. Of course, you must also think about other important things, like applying for your Australia visa on time.

First things first
If you are travelling to Australia, you should check in advance the list of items permitted by the Travel Security Association (TSA). Although in general, many sewing-related items like sewing and knitting needles are allowed, you cannot bring scissors over 4” or rotary cutters. You should also keep in mind that TSA officers always have the final say on whether an item is allowed through the security checkpoint.

Don’t forget your materials!
Make sure to bring a copy of your pattern as well as all the fabrics you will need for your project. Read your pattern carefully and bring along all the recommended items in the list of materials. Most of them are obvious, but if you think carefully, you might come up with something you hadn’t thought of.

Take your sewing machine with you
Taking your machine as carry-on baggage is always the best option, so you can be sure it is not mishandled. However, you will have to check your airline’s regulations and make sure that your machine is neither too big nor too heavy. If this is the case, you might like to invest in a travel sewing machine. There are many nice, light and compact models on the market that would be perfect for your trip to Australia or other trips you might make in the future. Before packing a sewing machine, remember to put the needle down and encased, to protect it from damage.

Apply for your Australia visa
Now that you are all set, you should also think about certain formalities you need to comply with before travelling, like applying for your Australia visa. Applying for an Australia visa is necessary if you visit the country for holiday or business. UK citizens can easily apply online for their Australia visa for a stay in Australia of up to three months .
