  2. Pot holder: 23cm round

Create a Cosy

    1. Measure the height of your chosen cafetière from the base to just below the spout, then add 2cm to this to give Measurement A. Now measure the circumference of the cafetière, passing the tape measure through the handle, then add 1cm to give Measurement B. Cut two rectangles from light blue spot fabric and another from wadding that measures A x B.

    2. Locate the mug template on page 80, enlarge as instructed and cut out. Using this as a guide cut out two mug shapes from pink spotted cotton fabric, then pin the shapes together with right sides facing. Stitch around the outer edges, with a 1cm seam allowance, leaving a small gap along the bottom edge. Clip the corners, turn through then slip stitch the gap closed.

    3. Position the mug on the right side of a fabric rectangle, at least 5cm in from the short right-hand edge, then pin in place, pushing in the side edges at the top so the mug bows out slightly to accommodate a spoon. For the handle cut a 10cm strip of orange check bias binding and fold in half lengthways with right sides facing. Stitch down the long edge with a 6mm seam allowance, turn through, then bend the strip into a curve.

    4. Press the handle shape flat, tuck the short ends under the left-hand edge of the mug and pin into place. Hand sew the handle to the cosy, then stitch the mug into position, leaving the top edge open. Tack wadding to the wrong side of the embellished rectangle. This will be the front of the cosy. Measure the distance between the two inside edges of the cafetiere handle, to give Measurement C.

    5. For the tabs, cut two rectangles from orange check fabric and lightweight sewin interfacing that measures C plus 2cm x 10cm. Press the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric tabs, then with right sides facing fold the tabs in half parallelwith the C edges. Stitch the top and bottom edges with a 1cm seam allowance. Clip the corners and turn through. Press the tabs flat and pin to the right side of the front cosy on short edges.

    6. Wrap the cosy around the cafetière, check the position of the tabs, they should slip through the handle and overlap. Remove the cosy. With right sides facing, pin the remaining cosy piece onto the front cosy section. Stitch the outer edges, with a 1cm seam allowance, leaving a gap on the lower edge to turn right side out. Carefully trim away the wadding in the seam allowance. Clip the corners and turn through. Press the edges of the cosy and slip stitch the gap closed. Top stitch 7.5mm from the outer edges.

    7. Cut two coordinating halves of sew-on hook and eye tape that each measure C minus 5mm. Separate the two sections, then pin one to the underside of the tab, nearest the mug and close to the outer long edge. Stitch into place then wrap the cosy around the cafetiere and pin the remaining section of hook and eye tape in the corresponding position on the other tab. Remove the cosy, then sew the second hook and eye tape strip into place to finish.

Make a Pot Holder

    1. Cut a 23cm diameter circle from light blue spotted fabric, pink spotted cotton fabric and curtain interlining. Sandwich the interlining between the two cotton circles, with the right sides facing outermost, then pin all of the layers together. Cut a 76cm length of orange bias binding.

    2. Turning under one end to start, open out one long edge of the binding and pin to the pink spotted side of the circle with right sides facing. Overlap the ends and cut off the excess binding. Stitch along the fold line. Turn the binding to the light blue spotted side of the circle and slip stitch the pressed edge along the seam.

    3. For the hanging loop cut a 23cm strip of orange bias binding. Fold in half lengthways with right sides facing and stitch down the long edge leaving a 6mm seam allowance. Turn through, then turn in the ends and slip stitch them closed. Overlap the strip 3cm from the ends, forming a loop. Place over the overlapping join of the binding and hand sew to the circle. Sew a light blue button at the base of the loop to finish.
