  1. Fabric: cotton, blue, yellow, floral; coordinating plain (binding and backing), 70cm x 90cm
  2. Quilt wadding, 70cm square
Size
  1. 62cm square
Cutting Guide
  1. Blue: cut two 7cm squares, 24 7cm x 12cm rectangles
  2. Yellow: cut four 7cm squares, 20, 7cm x 12cm rectangles
  3. Floral: cut four 7cm squares, 20, 7cm x 12cm rectangles
  4. Coordinating: cut four 4cm x 70cm strips, one 70cm square
  1. 6mm seam allowance used throughout, unless otherwise stated.

1 Lay out six rectangles for the bottom row in the following order: floral yellow, floral pink, dotty blue. Join these together along the shorter ends and press the seams to the right. For the next row, start with a floral yellow square and position five rectangles as follows: floral pink, dotty blue, floral yellow, floral pink, dotty blue. Join the shapes as before, seam to the first row of rectangles. Press the seams downwards.

2 Join a third row of six rectangles in this sequence: floral pink, dotty blue, floral yellow, floral pink, dotty blue, floral yellow. Sew this third row of rectangles to the second strip as before. Create eight more rectangle rows, alternating the fabrics in each one to create the diagonal chevron stripe design across the surface of the quilt, as pictured.

3 Assemble the quilt sandwich by spreading out the backing square face-down on your work surface. Put the quilt wadding on top and place the patchwork quilt top, right side up, onto the wadding. Secure the three layers together by inserting a safety pin in the centre of each patch. Quilt by hand or machine, stitching 4mm from both sides of each seam line.

4 Trim the edges so that the quilt is squared off. Press under a 1cm turning along one long edge of each binding strip. Bind the quilt as described in the next step, taking a 1cm seam allowance when you sew down the strips. Press under a 1cm turning along one long edge of each of the four binding strips. With right sides facing and raw edges matching, pin one of the strips to one edge of the quilted square so there is an equal overlap at each end. Machine stitch 15mm from the edge.

5 Turn the binding over to the wrong side so that the raw edges are enclosed. Pin down the folded edge and slip-stitch down. Bind the opposite edge in the same way and trim any overlapping ends. Sew the remaining strips to the other two edges of the square as for Step 4. Trim the overlap to 1cm at each end and press the ends inwards to neaten, before turning the binding to the back. Pin and slip-stitch the folded edges down.
