Make a snowman sweater

    1. Download and print the templates from sewmag.co.uk. Using the template, cut a jumper front along the solid line from pale grey felt. Using pinking shears down one edge, cut a 1.5cm x 7cm strip of dark blue felt. Using acid-free glue, stick it across the bottom of the jumper front, so the bottom edges meet and there is a slight overhang at both sides. Using pinking shears on both edges, cut a 1cm x 7cm piece of blue felt. Glue it above the previous piece and push the pinked edges together. Repeat the process with a 8mm x 7cm piece of pale felt. Repeat the process for the sleeve cuffs, cutting the pieces 3cm wide, ensuring the dark blue piece measures 8mm x 3cm.

    2. Using navy machine thread across the top of the dark blue felt and the bottom of the blue felt, sew zig zag stitch across all the pinked edges. Use a dark teal machine thread across the top of the blue felt and a light teal across both edges of the light blue felt. Sew vertical lines in navy machine thread across the bottom of the jumper on the dark blue felt. Using the template, cut the snowman’s head from white glitter felt and sew it in place with navy machine thread. Glue the orange fabric nose, then sew the eyes, mouth and carrot using black machine thread.

    3. Use the template to cut the neck cuff from light blue felt, stitch in place using the dashed line as the guide, 2mm from all four edges. Add vertical lines as shown. Trim off the overhang. Place the jumper front, right side up on top of a piece of pale grey felt roughly cut a bit bigger, and place the knotted end of a 22cm loop of silver ribbon in between them. Machine sew all the way around 2mm from the edge. Cut off all excess felt.

Sew a Fair Isle jumper

    1. Download and print the templates from sewmag.co.uk. Using the template, cut a jumper front from grey felt, then snip out the bottom ribbing and sleeve cuffs from mustard felt. Glue them in place and use navy thread to sew them in position. Cut five 1cm squares from pink fabric and glue them in place. Machine sew around the edges with mustard thread. Snip four 1cm circles from white felt, secure, then sew each one in place using pink embroidery thread.

    2. Snip and secure the felt neck ribbing and use navy machine thread to add the details as before. Using three strands of white embroidery thread, hand embroider using a straight stitch across the top of the mustard felt on both sleeves, jumper bottom and across the bottom edges of the pink squares.

    3. Using the template for guidance and three strands of purple embroidery thread, hand sew the zig zag line across the shoulders. Repeat with violet and pink embroidery thread directly underneath. Leave a slight gap, then repeat again with white embroidery thread. Using white embroidery thread, cover the jumper background with small random seed stitches. Make up the decoration as with the snowman jumper.

Stitch a cosy knit

    1. Download and print the templates from sewmag.co.uk. Cut a jumper front from a light blue felt. Snip a 1cm x 7cm piece of red felt and two 1cm x 3cm pieces with a random wavy line on one side. Secure in place at the sleeve cuffs and across the bottom of the jumper so the straight edges align. Machine sew across the wavy top edges in navy thread. Cut a 1.2cm x 7cm strip of blue felt, then trim both long edges into a random wavy line. Place across the bottom just above the previous piece with a slight gap. Machine sew in navy across both wavy edges.

    2. Snip the neck cuff from salmon felt, secure in place using the dashed line as a guide and sew the details in navy machine thread. Trace ‘cosy’ from the template onto white tissue paper, pin in place across the front and sew over it in white thread. Tear the tissue away and machine or hand stitch over it twice in white thread. Use royal blue thread to outline it.

    3. Using two strands of white embroidery thread, hand sew lines of running stitch across all the wavy edges. Using the template, hand sew the snowflakes randomly all over the front. Stitch seven French knots across the middle of the blue felt. Make up the decoration as with the snowman jumper.
