Some may think of quilting as a winter occupation, but there’s never a time when you don’t need a beautiful throw on your bed or sofa. This gorgeous design is perfect for summer, made with Art Gallery Fabrics’ charming Rapture collection. We’ve reinvented the traditional Ohio star block and adapted it to make a more modern (and easier!) alternative. Pair the fresh hues and florals of these fabrics with lightweight wadding for an ideal quilt for the season.
Make an ohio star block
For each block, cut two 9.5cm squares of red, teal, apricot and sun coloured fabric and eight of plain white. Pin a white square to the right side of each patterned square and draw a pencil line diagonally from corner to corner. Stitch the squares together 5mm either side of the line [1].
Cut along the pencil line to create two bi-coloured squares measuring 9cm. These are known as ’half square triangles’ or HSTs. Finger press the seam to the patterned side [2].
Use three HSTs of the same colour for quarter of the finished block. Cut a 9cm square of plain white cotton. Pin two HSTs right sides together and stitch down one
